Wilson Greatbatch (6 September 1919 – 27 September 2011) adalah Penemu alat pacu jantung pertama di Dunia. Greatbatch memiliki sebuah perusahaan yang didirikan pada tahun 1970 bernama Greatbatch Ltd yang sebelumnya bernama Wilson Greatbatch Ltd. Perusahaan tersebut merupakan produsen baterai yang digunakan untuk alat pacu jantungnya tersebut. Ia juga memiliki 150 hak paten.

Alat Pacu Jantung atau Pacemaker adalah alat yang mengasilkan rangsangan bagi konstruksi jantung dengan irama normal, digunakan bila pacu jantung sendiri tidak bekerja dengan baik, atau terdapat gangguan hantaran rangsangan yang dihasilkan oleh pacu jantung, sehingga jantung berdenyut terlalu lambat.

Alat pacu jantung Chardack-Greatbatch menggunakan Mallory mercury oksida-seng sel ( baterai merkuri ) untuk sumber energinya, menggerakkan dua transistor, transformator ditambah memblokir rangkaian osilator, semua dienkapsulasi dalam resin epoksi, kemudian digabungkan ke elektroda yang ditempatkan ke dalam miokardium jantung pasien. Inovasi yang dipatenkan ini mengarah pada perusahaan Medtronic dari Minneapolis yang memulai produksi dan pengembangan lebih lanjut dari alat pacu jantung buatan.

Hobi Greatbatch mencari temuan baru membuatnya masuk dalam daftar penemuan penting di National Inventors’ Hall of Fame di Akron, Ohio pada tahun 1998. Pada 1983, alat pacu jantung masuk dalam daftar 10 sumbangan teknologi yang penting kepada masyarakat dalam waktu 50 tahun terakhir oleh persatuan insinyur profesional, National Society of Professional Engineers.

Greatbatch menyelesaikan pendidikannya di Universitas Cornell dan Universitas Buffalo. Ia kemudian menjadi Dosen di Universitas Buffalo pada tahun 1952 hingga 1957. Greatbatch bahkan pernah dengan angkatan laut, sebagai penyelam pencari bom pada masa Perang Dunia II.

Pada 1960 Alat penemuan Greatbatch ini pertama kali dipasang di Rumah Sakit Veteran Buffalo pada pasien berusia 77 tahun. Alat tersebut bisa menjaga detak jantung secara teratur, bahkan pasien tersebut bisa bertahan hidup selama 18 bulan setelah pemasangan.


Kematian

Wilson Greatbatch meninggal pada usia 92 tahun pada 27 September 2011. Dia meninggalkan istrinya Eleanor, yang dinikahinya lebih dari 60 tahun, dan dikaruniai lima anak.
